Thoughts on the EWJ news last year

I have been trying to avoid writing about this…but there have been a few people asking recently. I will attempt to shed some light on the subject of the “Earthworm Jim revival”.
Seriously though… “Earthworm Jim 4″? That means that we are counting Earthworm Jim 3D, if we call it that. Earthworm Jim 3D had nothing to do with Doug TenNapel or the original people that made the first two games. It’s almost like a slap in the face calling it “the fourth one”.
In April of 2008, a press release for a new Earthworm Jim Movie, game and cartoon series was released by Interplay. (Via Doug TenNapel’s blog.)
It’s very difficult to see this thing going anywhere soon what with the way the EWJ character has been treated in the past: not including the current economic state (which I will not even attempt to go into), so I have been quite cautious of drumming up hype for anything. It’s not like there’s anything to drum up…I can’t make stuff up. It seems nothing is happening at all, or someone is just being very quiet.
That doesn’t bother me – I’ve run this site for a decade now out of my liking of the characters. Rushing such a thing would be foolhardy anyway. :arrowhead:
The truth is that the last good thing that was made for Earthworm Jim was made back in the 90′s. So even if it “came back”…if it stayed exactly the same as it was back in 1995, it wouldn’t be right. Plus if it wasn’t spear-headed by Doug TenNapel then it would be another joke like the creator unapproved appearances in Clay Fighter, Menace 2 the Galaxy, Earthworm Jim 3D or the (happily canned) PSP game. I certainly wouldn’t take one bit of notice if that happened again. I considered closing this site down after the way Doug was treated in 2006.
As seen on Interplay’s site
I don’t know whether the parties involved realise it or not, but EWJ needs to have some well deserved time with his creator before any movie, game of cartoon show deals could even be so much as drafted out. Too many bad sequels can really ruin characters credibility after a while. That worries me the most about the whole thing, not whether something will happen or not. I’d rather see nothing happen at all if it meant another “EWJ 3D”.
The best thing about the news was that Doug TenNapel finally seems to have his character back after years of seeing other people make a royal mess of it.
