Earthworm Jim was a character created by Doug TenNapel in 1993.
The original games were about a regular Earthworm who happened to be in the right place at the right time. He became a super hero after crawling into an Intergalactic indestructible super space cyber suit that had fallen from space.
Earthworm Jim was released in 1994, and was developed by a very able team at Shiny Entertainment. In 1996 it enjoyed a sequel Earthworm Jim 2, which helped spawn a toy line, TV Series and even a small comic book line.
